Fifth-grade Celebrates Chinese New Year

Submitted by sara.stout on

On Monday, January 23, Mrs. Knudsen's 5th grade class celebrated Chinese New Year.  The students learned about the lucky colors--red and gold--on this day in China.  They were able to simulate writing in Chinese calligraphy with black paint and white paper as they wrote the Chinese characters for a positive phrase of their choice.  The students were also able to make miniature Chinese lanterns to put into their red Chinese boxes.  Most of the lanterns that the fifth graders made pictured a student-drawn dragon in honor of it being the year of the dragon, a cricket, or another rendition of their Chinese characters with crayons, markers, or pencils.  The students enjoyed the chance to learn a little bit more about the Chinese culture.
