Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, declared, “What children need most are the essentials that grandparents provide in abundance.  They give unconditional love, kindness, patience, humor, comfort, lessons in life. And, most importantly, cookies.”

Here at Barnett Elementary we absolutely agree with this credo. We know that grandparents are a great blessing in the lives of our students.  To show our appreciation for all they do, the third grade students hosted a special Grandparents’ Day in September. The day started at noon as grandparents filled the lunchroom to eat with their special third grader.  After lunch, students took their grandparents on a tour, showing them the different parts of the school: the playground, their classroom, and, most importantly, their very own desk. Several grandparents took advantage of this time by taking pictures, asking questions, and really getting to know their grandchildren better by seeing where they spend a good portion of their day.

Grandparents and students then returned to the lunchroom for a special presentation which the students had been practicing for several weeks beforehand.  They sang songs, told their favorite things about their grandparents, and recited poems.  A slideshow of pictures of the students with their grandparents provided the grand finale.  The performance was a success and the proud faces in the audience showed that the grandparents loved every minute of it.  Afterwards, refreshments were served; and this time, the kids gave their grandparents cookies for a change. Thanks, grandparents, for all you do. You make our lives so much better!
