Taxation Without Representation Comes to Life for Barnett 5th Graders!

Submitted by jaimie.standish on

In 5th grade, we have been studying the American Revolution. In order to better understand "Taxation Without Representation", we had our 5th graders select a profession at the beginning of the week. They were then given a weekly salary. All seemed to be in their favor... until we started taxing them on everyday things. Everything from their desk to a piece of paper to extra lead in their pencil had a tax placed upon it. Students quickly realized that not having a say in what will be taxed and how much they will be taxed was not their favorite thing. We then discussed several of the different acts and taxes that led our founding fathers to declare their independence from England.
