Underground Railroad in the Fifth-grade

Submitted by sara.stout on

On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, the students in Mrs. Knudsen's fifth grade class went back in time to participate in the Underground Railroad. They were each assigned a part in the role-play. All of the roles were based on real people who actually helped or hindered slaves on the Underground Railroad. After researching their people and creating brief reports on their characters' accomplishments, the students created costumes and props for the day of the activity.  The students who were the slaves were able to move from a plantation in the South, all the way up to Canada with the help of many different people along the way who risked their lives to free them. When they made it to Canada, Mr. Cope talked to them about the value of freedom. The students were able to gain a greater appreciation for their freedoms that they enjoy because of this activity.
